How Old Should You Be to Cut Your Own Hair?

This is my beautiful Little Girl, and her beautiful natural curls. They kink up in the humidity, relax in this dry winter air, but always look adorable on her.

She’s been asking for hair cuts for several months, ever since she accompanied me to Elli’s haircuts. I’ve appeased her by nibbling at the ends of her hair, giving it a nice even line and trimming the split ends. But never removing much length.

Today, while I was at work and the babysitter was changing The Rascal’s diaper, she grabbed a pair of child’s scissors, hid under the dining room table, and began the haircut she’s been wanting.

She managed to get quite a pile of hair chopped off before being discovered. Including some shortish bangs (sorry for the blurry photo… I had a 17-month-old and a pug clamoring for attention too). We talked a lot about how you don’t cut your own hair, you go to someone who knows how to cut hair (we won’t go into how I tried to save money in college by cutting my own just yet).

She asked me how old you had to be to learn how to cut your own hair. Could you do it when you’re 13? I told her I thought probably 16. Then she said, “Maybe I’ll learn how in preschool next year.”

Since I thought (totally biased opinion of course) that her hair was too pretty to throw out, I had the stylist measure it. I was pretty sure that when those curls were pulled straight, that she had the ten inches required to donate hair to Locks of Love, a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children in the United States and Canada under age 18 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. Sure enough, she had enough to send in!

She loves her new cut because it’s just like her cousin’s. Here we’ve pulled the bangs aside with a barrette. I have to admit that as much as I loved her hair long, it’s adorable in this stacked bob too.

And for the record, the stylist says you have to be 16 to go to cosmetology school, and it takes 2 years to finish. My Little Girl counted… that means she has 13 more years to go.

I have never thought that Little Girl looked like Elli at all but with that hair cut I could see Elli.

Everytime that my Ellie goes to get her haircut and they ask how she wants it, she reply “cut it long”. She believes that she could leave there with longer hair than when she starts.

We are almost to Locks Of Love point. Her hair is very straight so you can’t stretch it. Now, Shannon the other hand could use some Miracle Grow.

Oh Joy, I can’t believe she did that. I always feared my Lauren with her curls would too. BUT OH MY GOSH, she looks adorable with her new hairstyle. Now that you spoiled her by taking her to cookie cutters (my kids favorite) it will be hard to convince her to go to great clips (which we did recently: ) Glad you were able to donate her hair, hard to believe she had 10 inches there.

It’s sad that she made the cut, but the new “do” is adorable on her. And, my guess to the question you asked about how old you should be to cut your own hair would be “lots older than Little Girl is now!” :) Love that she donated her hair too–makes it more special. She’s a cutie!!

NOOOOO!!!! I love(d) her long wild hair. Tell her that’s what I did and look what happened to mine. She’ll never do it again.

So, now I know the rest of the story….Ha! I wondered why it was SO SHORT today.

It IS cute, but I too miss that great mop of curls.

Oh no! I was always scared one of my girls would do that. I think we’re out of the woods with the 8- and 6-year-olds, but the 3-year-old has hair just like your Little Girl.

She looks adorable with the new cut. Praise the Lord, right??

She is so precious! I love her new hair cut!
Girls are much more into their hair more than boys. My boys hardly know that there is hair up top of their heads!
What a good Mommy you are too! Those testy moments really become us, don’t they?

I see other comments here that echo what I was going to say – with her hair short like this I can definitely see a resemblance to her sister (and that’s from just the few photos I’ve seen around here on the blog). We’ve had only 2 serious hair incidents and one was actually my youngest son who did it to himself. Little Girl looks very cute with this short cut, by the way!!
